Purpose
The Amputation Surgery Education Center was created with the intent to provide a free, centralized, and comprehensive amputation surgery resource for surgeons around the world. The Center provides easy access for surgeons to locate information, review recent advancements, and re-familiarize themselves with the critical aspects of amputation surgery in order to improve patient outcomes.
Content
The Center provides information in the form of photos, videos, documents, recent literature, publications, and a variety of other educational materials. These materials are organized into "Teaching Modules" for each major level of amputation.
Background
Amputation surgery, while performed quite frequently throughout the world, is highly variable in both content and intensity. Patient outcomes are strongly dependent upon the expertise and experience of the surgeon. Many amputations, however, are performed by surgeons with limited exposure to this specialty. Attention to small details can make great strides toward a successful rehabilitation and prosthetic fitting.
Improvement can be achieved through training and education, however most attempts to date have proven inadequate. Traditional classroom teaching has been attempted for decades, and despite efforts by surgical leaders, these methods have not improved surgical techniques except in a few localized centers of excellence. Conventional training has not been adequate in solving the problem.
The ASEC seeks a solution by gathering and presenting this vital surgical information in a format that is available day and night, worldwide, and that is easily accessible. It caters to the time constraints and hectic schedules of surgeons today in an effort to have the needed impact on amputation outcomes. This site conveys surgical details with visual accuracy, and highlights both the major goals and minor details that can make a difference. This new method of just-in-time education is now at the fingertips of surgeons worldwide.
